Select Portsmouth in the Virginia court system

Use Virginia’s case-information page to choose the General District or Circuit Court search, then select Portsmouth. The General District Court’s local page identifies its criminal misdemeanor docket. Keep the court name from your citation, notice or earlier paperwork beside you; a search in the wrong court can miss the proceeding you need.

For a circuit matter, use the Portsmouth Circuit Court contact and the circuit search route. The public circuit system covers selected courts, so ask the local clerk if the case or period you need is not accessible through that route.

Portsmouth VA Criminal Court Records task checklist

  • ✓
    Identify the court level

Match General District or Circuit to the paperwork before searching.

  • ✓
Use the case number when possible

Retain the court selection while testing name or hearing-date searches.

  • ✓
    Follow transfers or continuations

If a matter moves to Circuit Court, locate the later case before interpreting outcome.

  • ✓
    Request the actual filing

Ask the responsible clerk for the judgment or other document needed.

  • ✓
Do not treat an empty public search as conclusive

Coverage and confidentiality limits can leave records unresolved.

From a possible match to a usable record

  1. Search the appropriate system with the case number when known. Virginia also offers name and hearing-date searches; retain the court selection when changing search methods.
  2. Compare the candidate’s case number, charge and relevant dates with your paperwork. Record the disposition actually shown, including whether the matter remains unresolved.
  3. For the judgment or another document, contact the clerk holding that case. Circuit clerks are the custodians; an online status entry is not the document itself. Ask whether a plain or certified copy fits your purpose.

If papers show that the matter continued in another court, follow the later court and case reference. Do not interpret the end of an earlier docket as a final acquittal or conviction without the later outcome.

What an unsuccessful search leaves unresolved

Virginia’s statewide case system includes adult criminal information from juvenile and domestic relations district courts. That adult-case coverage does not make confidential juvenile information public. Check the court and case category before deciding that an empty search means no record exists.

Give the Portsmouth clerk the approximate year, party name and any case reference, and explain whether you need status, a specific order or a certified disposition. Ask about permitted access and the applicable copy charge before ordering. Keep any answer limited to that court and case; it is not a statewide criminal-history clearance.

General District and Circuit records are not interchangeable

Circuit

Use the Portsmouth Circuit Court route for matters filed or continued there. The statewide Case Status and Information page distinguishes General District and participating Circuit access.

When a felony matter begins in a lower court and later proceeds in Circuit Court, keep both case references until the final disposition is located. Do not infer the final result from an earlier docket ending.
